Who am I?

My name is Rosanna Crawford, I was born and raised in Canmore, AB and started cross country skiing by the time I could walk! At the age of 10 I started biathlon and fell in love! Something about the challenge of skiing and shooting really stuck with me and being able to hang out with your friends wasn't too bad either! At 14 I got to compete in my first National Champs and got a taste of what it was like to race on a bigger scale! By 16 I was on the National team and trying to make international teams. In 2008 I competed in my first World Youth and Junior Championships in Ruhpolding, Germany. That was when I got hooked!
I train full time out of Canmore and spend my winters racing all over Canada and Europe. Follow along as I compete and train all around the World!
It is here that I hope to keep you up to date on my training and racing. I would not be able to do what I love without the support of my family and sponsors, so a big shout out to you guys!
Now what is biathlon you might ask. Biathlon combines the physical exertion of cross country skiing and the challenge of rifle marksmanship. Skiing is always skate technique and shooting is either laying down on your stomach (prone) or standing up (standing).

From South America to Northern Canada!

I always look forward to April come March. After a full winter of racing and traveling it's nice to know that there is some down time ahead! But since I missed Canadian Champs due to a cold I still had an itch to keep racing. Lucky for me there was a winter triathlon going to be held in Canmore, I signed up, tuned up my bike and hoped that the 15cm of snow in the forecast race day was just a joke. No such luck, it snowed 15cm and kept snowing. The 10km ski took close to 45min (usually it would take around 30min) 10km bike in fresh snow on old snow took about an hour (last year it took people around 30min) and the 5km run took 30min. It was a tough day and looking back it was pretty fun! I won the women's category and got  a sweet cookie medal to show for my hard work! The event was run great by AscentPhysio.

After that it was a week and a half in Canmore enjoying the amazing conditions at the Nordic Centre. Then Brendan and I jumped back on a plane and made our way to Belize. We had a great time soaking up the sun, swimming in the ocean and going on adventures. We spent 5 days on the main land in a town called Hopkins. We hiked to some water falls, kayacked and went out night boating in the attempt to catch a crocodile! From there we took a little plane to Ambergris Cayes to the town San Pedro. There we did some snorkelling, enjoy some beach time, rented bikes and road all over the island.

After Belize we were home a couple of days before heading to NWT to Brendan's home town of Hay River. It was great to hang out with B's family and get to see where he grew up. We skied on rivers, lakes and up creeks, walked to some great water falls, bird watched and attempted to go fishing (we didn't catch anything) I had a great time and got see how beautiful the North is. I was told it's even nicer in the Summer.

After I got home from NWT I was off to Calgary for 5 days to get lasik eye surgery at the Gimbel eye centre. Sunday I spent the night in Calgary because my appointment was at 7am.
Monday - eye assessment to see which surgery is best suited for my eyes
Tuesday - lasik eye surgery, two hours after the surgery I could SEE without glasses or contacts.
Wednesday - follow up to make sure eyes are healing well and get the ok to drive. Eye sight is now 20/15 (which is better that 20/20)
Thursday - one more follow up because left eye wasn't healing quite as well as the right.
Friday - back to training without contacts!
Being able to see without glasses or contacts is amazing! I used to not be able to do anything without something to help me see. The Gimbel eye centre took amazing care of me and I knew I was in good hands!
Now it is back to full time training. Skiing is still good at the Nordic centre which is incredible for May 6th! May 21st we head over to Europe for our first training camp. It sounds like it is going to be lots of fun, rifle testing at the University of Salzburg, training in Ruhpolding, Germany (where World Champs are next year) and road biking through the Dolomites!
So with this spring weather (finally) I say get out there and enjoy the outdoors.
Ciao
Rosanna
